I am using CrunchBang Linux atm, which bases on Ubuntu, but it's not necessarily best for a new users. Ubuntu is obviously good one but another worth of trying is LinuxMint (bases also on Ubuntu). Basically the best thing is to download and burn some LiveCDs and test what you like best. :)

I hope you find something that will make you happy. For me Linux has been really good.

I have Intrepid Ibex. I've buggered it up in spades I think, but then again, you know how bad I am at tech stuff. It works fine, but I *know* Linux can work better than how I've got it working. I'm just waiting til I get home and get my dissertation finished before handing it off to James or Tim.

I haven't had any major problems using it, as a long-time Windows user. I recommend giving it a go, it's so easy that even I managed to get it up and running aye! :bounce:

I use Ubuntu and Vista. The changeover is a pretty large one since most of the customizing in Ubuntu is done through "the back door".
I really like Ubuntu though and its sometimes really refreshing to step away from windows for something else.
The best version to get would be the latest - Jaunty Jackalope. Its the latest and also the best so far. The others are just as good, but Jaunty's interface is a lot sleeker and more "established" looking.

Hope this helps and good luck!

Hmmm, I have a friend who is a computer sci major...might see if he'd be interested in building me a computer when this one chucks (which is probably going to be within the year =/)

Best of luck with Linux and Windows 7. If I had the money I'd be a Mac. Sadly, I do not.
