@Kathleen: Unfortunately, the majority of characters in this story are Scottish. But thanks for the suggestion.

There’s also a character in Willow called Sorsha, and I’ve loved the sound of that. But Sorcha it is.

Sorcha is a beautiful name. Juliet Marillier named her main character in Daughter of the Forest Sorcha and the name fitted that character perfectly.

Caitlin is also a very beautiful name if you are looking for Irish names.

@Aisling: I have one called Aylin, if it’s a start? Although it’s a Turkish name, not an Irish one.

You might want to read Wicked Lovely though – the main character is called Aislinn, which is a variant.

Don’t feel too bad re-using names if the names fit. I mean, calling all your main characters “Kate” is bound to raise eyebrows, but for your minor characters? Chances are, you’ll have to double up on names eventually.

Why not take a leaf out of Russell T. Davis’ book? He likes to reuse names, especially last names, as he says this gives him a blank slate to start with…

I had a penpal named Sorcha when I was about 9 or 10. /random

Characters’ names are rarely a problem for me. I’m trying to think of how I come up with them, and I can’t. I guess they just come to me.

I am having one little problem right now. One of my supporting characters is having a baby girl, and I just can’t find the right name. I don’t want something weird, and I don’t want something boring. It’s hard!

I know what you mean. It takes me ages to come up with suitable names, and usually I just go to this website I use, and browse the names there until I have found something I like
